12 Spider-Man Questions That Always Confused You

2. Why Does J. Jonah Jameson Hate Spider-Man?

Spider-Man Questions
Marvel Comics

Spidey has saved New York City more than probably any other superhero. He was even nice enough to save the world every once in a while.

Nevertheless, the editor of the Daily Bugle, J. Jonah Jameson, hates Spider-Man and is directly responsible for tainting the superhero's public image. No matter Spider-Man defeats or rescues, Jameson manages to twist the story to paint Webhead as the bad guy. He detests Spidey so much, Jameson has allied with supervillains and tried to kill him!

But why? What did Spider-Man ever do? Jameson may come across as an unreasonable jerk but you can understand his motivation when you learn his backstory.

When his wife, Joan, was killed by a masked gunman, Jameson was so traumatised, he developed an instant suspicion and mistrust to anyone wearing a mask.

Also, his stepfather used to beat Jameson’s mother, which rattled him from a young age. Sadly, his stepfather got away with this behavior since he was a war veteran and a decorated officer. As a result, Jameson is suspicious of anyone who is regarded as a hero.

This may not justify Jameson's irrational behaviour but it does help understand it.
