13 Inappropriate Moments That Prove Comics Are Made By Total Perverts

8. Strippers

As already mentioned, there's something unspoken but obvious in the way superheroes are dressed: the clinging material of the male characters is supposed to show off their physique and make their figures seem desirable as an aspirational target for comic book fans (who will probably never get anywhere that level of definition.) The female characters are a slightly different matter. They aren't written or dressed for girls, because the market remains largely male-dominated, even if there are more female readers now than ever, and they certainly aren't being used as aspirational models for the majority of readers. Instead they are clad in lycra, and given voluptuous curves that their small waists make mostly impossible, and those assets are given major focus. Sometimes that spills over into outright sexual yearning, as artists put their creations into uncompromising positions in order to trade on their sexual appeal, and the knowledge that a certain kind of comic book fan will buy anything with even a hint of nudity, like when She-Hulk was made to strip in front of a group of seedy cops...
That jump rope reference might seem like a joke, but the artists actually went one further with this cover...
But then, it isn't just characters like She-Hulk who are prey to the voyeuristic gaze, as even Robin has been subjected to the same kind of misogynistic gaze...
