11. You Couldn't Care Less About Indie Comics
What You Say: Marvel and DC dominate the industry. Superheroes have such a stranglehold that its impossible for independent works to find an audience. And these indie comics are where the really great storytelling is happening! There are so many comics put out every month that if people were serious about just wanting good stories, theyd stop buying Marvel and DC books they cant stand and start looking at the original stuff! Thats where all the innovation really is! But What You Really Mean: We all know you only bought that single volume of Scott Pilgrim because you liked the movie. Or because you wanted to impress that cute girl who works at the bookstore. And sure, you might talk a big game, but the truth is people would much rather stick with something theyre comfortable with than branch out and try something new. Marvel and DC are safe and even if the stories right now are bad, theres always that eternal sense of hope and at the very least, you already know you like those characters. So better to stick with what you know instead of taking a risk on an unknown quantity.
