14 Weirdest Comic Book Weaknesses

11. The Human Torch - Oxygen

Red Hulk Fire
Marvel Comics

Before you ask, no, this isn't about the Fantastic Four member known as Johnny Storm. The original Human Torch was created by Carl Burgos and debuted in Marvel Comics #1 in 1939 (which was only a year after Superman).

The first Human Torch was a synthetic android who could fly and shoot fire. Now, blasting fire from your body is a pretty nifty power. The problem is that the synthezoid doesn't have a say in the matter. Because of the material he is composed of is combustible, Torch automatically bursts into flame the instant he is exposed to oxygen. You know... that gas that's... everywhere.

In theory, his weakness is a good idea since people love stories about misunderstood creatures like Frankenstein's Monster or Quasimodo. However, it's an odd decision to make Torch incapable of approaching anyone without potentially killing them. I mean, it's a creative weakness but it makes it verrrrrry limiting what he can and can't do while he plays superhero.

Eventually, this concept was changed so the Torch could control his fire at will.
