15 Best Superhero Redesigns
8. Batgirl - Cassandra Cain
Batgirl has always had a pretty good look, with her long red hair flowing out from under her cowl and yellow trim accentuating her outfit. It was instantly recognisable, full of personality, vivacious and fun.
It could be argued she had more of a family friendly vibe than the rest of the Bat family, but that in and of itself isn’t anything too bad. There are enough Bat-esque characters for everyone, after all. However, when Cassandra Cain adopted the mantle in the late nineties, it gave the character a decidedly different edge.
It’s this edge that earns Batgirl her spot on the list. Changing a character to this extreme could have backfired spectacularly - as several Superman redesigns have done over the years - but by going hard and going big, it transformed the mantle with huge success.
Cassandra Cain’s Batgirl was much darker, with a ninja inspired design with a spiky, almost nasty feel to it.
Right from the short black hair cut, Cain was marked as something different. The long ears on her cowl, her hood, even her smirk - much meaner than the cheery smile Batgirl often wore - all elevated Cassandra Cain’s Batgirl into someone able to survive on her own.
