15 Comic Book Tropes That Need To Stop

13. Gender-Determinative Powers

There's a reason characters like She-Hulk and Wonder Woman are so feted when compared to other female superheroes. For the majority of their female kin, there is a stereotypical power set that they fall into. Whilst the blokes get super strength, speed, agility, and more "attacking" powers, superwomen are usually saddled with the defensive abilities. That's why most of your psychic heroes are female, the Invisible Woman who can sneak away from battles or protect the offensive line of the team, or the huge amount of women who don't even powers. As mentioned before there are exceptions to the rule, but they're so few and far between that when women characters are blessed with a more pro-active set of skills they're a novelty. Wonder Woman is the only consistent female on the Justice League's roster, and she needs to prove she belongs there, which explains her brawn. She-Hulk, meanwhile, is still seen as nothing more than a Hulk knock-off to this day. It's boring and lazy and falls prey to societal prejudices that are total nonsense.
