15 Greatest Joker Comics Of All Time

5. The Dark Knight Returns: Hunt The Dark Knight

Joker Rebirth
DC Comics

The most thoroughly individualized Joker of all time can be found in the icky center of this excessive ‘80s update. Frank Miller tweaked the look and feel of the character in ways that add up to a very probable older Joker - the white suit, the tall but heavy build, the taut yet wrinkled skin, the tiny puckered mouth. It's arguably an even more unsettling look than normal.

And this Joker just comes out and calls Batman “darling” and “my sweet” in the midst of knife play. He’s straight up perverse.

Crucially, Miller also gives the character a great death, with Joker twisting his own spine into oblivion. That feels pretty definitive.
