15 Most Controversial DC Retcons Of All Time

12. Barry Alan€™s Rebirth

For the longest time Barry Alan was hard proof that some comic book character did in fact stay dead. Having met his demise during Crisis On Infinite Earths, Barry Alan was canonised as the patron saint of speedsters. He was remembered as an upbeat moral pillar that defined what it meant to be a hero. Then Final Crisis happened. Athough Grant Morrison€™s Final Crisis resurrected Barry Alan, it was Geoff Johns€™ The Flash: Rebirth that completely reworked Barry€™s origin. Originally, Barry received his powers a decided to become the Flash because he felt that it was the right thing to do. However, Geoff Johns retconned Barry€™s origin, which now includes the Reverse Flash travelling back in time to kill Barry€™s mother. Barry€™s father ended up going to prison for her murder where he eventually died. When Johns rewrote Barry€™s origin, he completely changed the character€™s motivation. Barry no longer was the guy who did the right thing simply because it was the right thing; he became the Flash in order to solve his mother€™s murder and get justice for his father. So much for the happy-go-lucky Flash of the silver age. This version of Barry might as well be called Bat-Flash.

Since childhood, Bryant has been an avid fan of superheroes, and he has been reading comic books since 2006. His full name is "George Bryant Lucas"; however, after enduring countless Darth Vader jokes, he has chosen to go by his middle name. Born and raised in the United States, Bryant is currently living with his lovely wife in the country side of Wiltshire County, UK. Bryant does suffer from a mild case of dyslexia; misspellings and homonyms are to be expected on occasion.
