15 Most Inappropriate Batman Storylines Of All Time

6. The Dark Knight Strikes Again (Sadly)

Frank Miller is responsible for some of the best Batman stories ever told. With artist David Mazzucchelli he produced the definitive origin story in Year One, bringing the grim and gritty city of Gotham to life and giving us a peek into how Bruce Wayne went from damaged billionaire orphan to damaged billionaire orphan in a bat costume. He also wrote and drew the definitive later years story with The Dark Knight Returns, a look at a dystopian future Gotham where an elderly Bruce Wayne comes out of retirement in order to clean up the streets, beat up Superman and provide a scathing criticism of Reagan's America. They're both pretty rad. Which makes The Dark Knight Strikes Again, the long-awaited follow up to his eighties classic, all the more disappointing.

Not only that, but the two-decades-in-the-making sequel ended up being full of inappropriate nonsense. The Dark Knight Returns had its brief interludes of violence and that one bit with the huge topless lady with swastika pasties over her nipples, but in the years between Returns and Strikes Again Miller had fully metamorphosised into the right-wing maniac he is today. The politics are messy but even more so is the comic itself, which involves a trio of scantily-clad pop stars called The Superchix, half the big DC heroes either dying or being brainwashed by the government, and an insane elderly Dick Grayson behind everything. It's offensive to everyone!
