Stranded in the future, the paths the X-Men were on changed. Iceman realized he was gay, Cyclops took off into the stars with his father, and Jean Grey and Beast got together. It wasn't the weirdest relationship in comics, but it was still super out there.

There are almost fifty years of good X-Men comics out there, and almost none of them had anything that could possibly hint at Beast and Jean Grey getting together, but once they landed in a world where everyone knew about them, where one was blue and furry and the other was dead, the strangest X-Men team up of all time came about.
