20 Absolutely Masterful First Pages Of Comics

1. New Gods #1

New Gods 1
DC

"There came a time when the Old Gods died! The brave died with the cunning! The noble perished, locked in battle with the unleashed evil! It was the last day for them! An ancient era was passing in fiery holocaust!"

Whew! With this first page, Jack Kirby was breaking firmly with his Marvel work, portraying Ragnarok, the death of the Norse gods (gods like Thor, one of his long-running Marvel projects). As the name of the series implies, the old are giving way to new gods, which Kirby himself would now create.

Even more ambitious than Lee and Ditko's declaration in Amazing Fantasy #15, even grander than the explosion of an ancient galaxy, Kirby's booming beginning is unmatched for sheer scope and scale.
