20 Absolutely Masterful First Pages Of Comics

17. Saga Of The Swamp Thing #21

Saga Of The Swamp Thing 21
DC

In the previous issue, the Swamp Thing had apparently died and his friends were scattered. Only dyed-in-the-wool DC fans might have recognized the name "Jason Woodrue," a JLA villain new to this series' pages. The face of the "old man" belongs to General Avery Sunderland, the man responsible for the Swamp Thing's death.

Seeing the world of the series turned upside down so that the villain was now the victim was only part of the jolt to longtime readers of the series: the rest comes from the lyrical language Woodrue uses to describe his surroundings and the interesting interplay of comics panels and panels of glass. A compelling start to one of the most game-changing stories in comics.
