1. Bruce Wayne Becomes Batman (Batman #23)
In Batman #23, the third chapter of Scott Snyder and Greg Capullo's Zero Year epic, we finally got to see the pivotal moment in Bruce's early career where he comes to the realisation that he must "become a bat" (in this case, after a severe beating at the hands of Red Hood). It's a moment we've seen time and again, but only just for the first time in the context of the New 52. This was, as mentioned, a redoing of a scene we've witnessed a few times previously in Batman's origin stories (most prominently, Frank Miller and David Mazzucchelli's 1986 story, Batman: Year One, which this scene is a near carbon copy of). It is a key moment in Batman lore that always occurs with a bat present. Capullo describes why it is so good as follows:
It happens in the dark very dramatic because of the use of powerful blacks. It involves a bat that seems to be psychically in tune with a man bats are cool even without any of that, by the way. And, a man is realising his destiny something every one of us is hoping to realise before meeting our end. That's my take, anyway.
Very poignant indeed and a great scene to epitomise 2013's awesome year in comics. So there you have it - the twenty best comic book moments in 2013. Did you like this list? Agree with the entries?
