20 Essential Comic Issues You Must Read Before You Die

3. Hawkeye #11

Batman Man Who Laughs Cover Joker
Marvel

Hawkeye by Matt Fraction and David Aja is up there as one of the best comics of the past few years. What made it so great was its fantastic use of visual storytelling that really pushed the way comics could deliver a story.

One of the highlights (another being an entire issue in sign language) was an issue told entirely from the perspective of Hawkeye's pet Lucky the Pizza Dog.

The issue is an innovative mix of minimal dialogue (representing the few words Lucky understands) and symbols to represent the sounds and smells he uses to understand the world. The result is a comic unlike any other.

I was just a mild-mannered NCTJ accredited journalist until one day I found out the truth... that I could share my nerdy ramblings with people on the internet! It's just like mumbling to myself on the train, but without all the strange looks.
