Initially, Rhino was portrayed as "Spider-Man's dimmest villain", a dumb thug who worked as an enforcer for the Russian Mafia. However, more recent stories have increased the complexity of the character. He tried to give up his life of crime, moving away with his wife Oksana. A new version of the Rhino was able to track him down though and killed his wife, prompting Alexei to re-don his costume ans exact revenge.
Now Rhino is a tragic figure, a man who is only a criminal because he has nothing else to live for.
