Like many comic books, novels, TV shows, and movies, The Dark Knight Returns - which is now considered a classic - did not receive kind reviews from critics upon its release. The New York Times for example dismissed it in 1987 as "convoluted, difficult to follow and crammed with far too much text" and criticised the "grotesquely muscle-bound Batman and Superman". Fans would embrace it of course, and it's since become regarded as one of the all-time great Batman stories. Little did that reviewer know that the graphic novel would serve as the basis for next year's highly anticipated Batman V Superman: Dawn Of Justice.
