Thor's journey to the big screen was not an easy one, with one attempt close to $300 million in budget and Matthew Vaughn bailing on a movie which would have focused on the God of Thunder's years as a Viking. Those came about in the early 2000s, but Sam Raimi was very close to helming a Thor movie back in 1990. Baffled 20th Century Fox executives couldn't get their heads around the idea though, and the filmmaker would instead go on to direct a trilogy of Spider-Man movies. Talk of a Thor movie continued for years, but it was Marvel Studios who eventually decided to pull the trigger on the risky endeavour. It paid off!
