10. His Girlfriend's Corpse Was Crammed Into A Fridge

In one of the most controversial comic book stories of all-time, the Green Lantern series - which starred Kyle Rayner at the time - took strong female character Alexandra DeWitt (his girlfriend and a successful photographer) and shoved her corpse into a fridge when she was murdered by a Z-List villain. What caused such a stir was the fact that this was done solely to advance Kyle's story, and "Fridging" became the word associated with women being killed off in comics in order to achieve that. It backfired on the series however, as the lead became much less interesting after being transformed into just another angst ridden superhero.
