11. They Offered Free Copies Of Siege For Destroyed DC Comics

A few years ago, during their Blackest Night event, DC offered a special promotion to retailers. If they placed certain orders for tie-in titles to the event, they would have the opportunity to buy a set of collectible Green Lantern rings as well.

Seemingly taking a play out of the Dr. Doom handbook of evil plans, Marvel saw a way to combat this by offering a promotion of their own. In exchange for 50 ripped covers from any of these special DC tie-in comics, they would give retailers a free copy of Siege #3, complete with a rare Deadpool variant cover.

Whereas DC’s idea helped boost sales, promote lesser titles and offer a neat collectible to fans, Marvel’s did not go over so well. It was generally seen as being in bad taste as well as not making any financial sense for retailers. Deadpool is popular, but throwing away potentially hundreds of dollars of merchandise just for one of his covers? He’s not that popular.
