There’s plenty of comics for adults out there, so hearing that a comic book had its background littered with secret messages containing the word ‘sex’ isn’t exactly shocking. When the comic in question, however, is New X-Men, then it certainly garners some surprise.

That was the case with New X-Men #118, in which artist Ethan Van Sciver hid the word ‘sex’ in his art on no less than every single page. It’s scrawled in bushes, hidden in the waves of hair, and even on a whiskey bottle.

So why did he do it? Was Van Sciver visually building on the subliminal-focused content from the story or hinting towards the future relationship between Emma Frost and Cyclops? No, he was simply annoyed with Marvel. Van Sciver can’t even recall why, but he has since claimed that it was done for no reason other than a spiteful desire to get back at them. Well, he wanted to get away with it, so good job? It’s fairly petty, but it’s hard to deny that the whole thing appeals to our more childish sense of humour.
