Though he’s now one of the faces of the MCU, there was once a time when Chris Evans wanted no part of playing Captain America. After being locked into multiple Fantastic Four movies of dubious quality, he didn’t want to sign yet another big contract where he’d have no way to protect himself from a string of bad movies.

Apprehensive about the commitment and not wanting to work out every day to prepare for the role, Evans turned down Cap twice. He further cited a desire to direct in the future and to maintain some semblance of anonymity in his personal life, so Marvel attempted to move on. The public focus of the casting then shifted to names like John Krasinski and Scott Porter, but Chris Evans was never really off the table.

Shortly thereafter, Evans started having second thoughts, especially after consulting with both his agent and his therapist. When Marvel dropped the contract commitment from nine movies to six, it was enough for Evans to sign on, and the rest is history.
