5 Common Comic Book Questions With Obvious Answers
4. Can A Lightsaber Cut Captain America's Shield?
Here we have perhaps the two most recognizable items in two of the most successful franchises of recent memory - Captain America's vibranium shield and a lightsaber, the weapon of choice for Star Wars' Jedi Knights.
Naturally, fans have since questioned if a lightsaber could cut through Cap's vibranium weapon, owing to the fact it's meant to be indestructable, while lazer-swords are meant to be able to cut through anything.
With the success of the Marvel Cinematic Universe and the revitalization of Star Wars, this has been a question of contest in recent years. Even Mark Hamill and Chris Evans - Luke Skywalker and Captain America themselves - weighed in when asked on Twitter last year.
It is a fun question to ask, but it is one with an easy answer: no. Lightsabers are dangerous and imposing weapons, but Captain America's shield has withstood incredibly powerful attacks, including blows from Thor's hammer Mjolnir, Wolverine's claws and Iron Man's repulsor blasts. Cap's shield has been broken before, but only through contact with beings of earth-shattering capability, such as a gauntlet-wielding Thanos and Molecule Man .
It is true that every metal has a melting point, so the heat of a light saber could be a factor. With enough uninterrupted exposure, the heat from a lightsaber could melt the shield, the key word being "uninterrupted". In a bout between Cap and a Jedi, Steve Rogers may not walk away victorious, but his shield will remain intact.
