1. Superman
Whaaaaaaaaaat?! Yup, I think Superman is the big name set to die by the close of the Event. He won't be the death that kicks it off simply because that would then overshadow everything that follows it, plus people love Superman and want to see his involvement in this Event. But someone from Justice League should die and heres why its got to be Superman. It cant be Batman because he died too recently in Final Crisis; it cant be Wonder Woman because theres no other female character in the group; it cant be Aquaman because people are actually reading his comics for the first time in forever and really enjoying them; it cant be Cyborg because hes not big enough, plus hes the Justice Leagues teleporter theyve shown just how useful those boom tubes are so hes not going anywhere; it cant be Green Lantern because he too died too recently. I think itll come down to Flash or Superman but I really think Superman is the guy with the biggest target on his head. Superman is one of the biggest names in the DCU and an icon outside of comics. Sure he died in the early 90s but it's been a while since then and DC might want to redo that Event for a new generation in the New 52. Plus it's guaranteed that Superman's death will grab the headlines necessary to bring more readers in to pick up the book, possibly get back into DC Comics, and start closing the gap between DCs flagging sales to Marvel. Hes such a big name that his death will affect everyone in the DCU and create any number of interesting storylines as characters react, and others attempt to take on his duties as protector of Metropolis in his stead. Of course, Superman won't die for real, he'll wind up someplace weird like the Phantom Zone or some magical dimension (Pandora's Box?) so his series will tackle his return to the DC Universe as he battles his way home. But this is Supermans year, Man of Steel is ruling the box office! you say. Sure, hes definitely having a great year but dont forget what happened to Batman when The Dark Knight came out in 2008 he died in the comics. And not just once but twice! First in a battle with the Black Glove (which was a fakeout as he survived the helicopter blast) and second when Darkseids omega beams hit him (which was also a fake out but not immediately obvious as we were left with the image of Superman holding the charred skeleton of Batman). Despite a characters popularity on the big screen, DC have shown their willingness to take the chance at killing them to capitalise further on the characters enhanced exposure, knowing full well they'll be brought back in time. So how will Superman die? I can't say for sure but if Zatanna's vision in Constantine #4 of Constantine shaking hands with Lex is an indicator then maybe Constantine uses his magic to temporarily disable Superman's powers, long enough for Lex to unleash some devastating weapon against Superman and "killing" him. Enraged by her lover's death, Wonder Woman strikes down Constantine, giving us his after-life story and his shot at redemption. Plus it gives DC a chance to reference their biggest Event in their history, Crisis on Infinite Earths, where a distraught Superman is holding the body of Supergirl they could do a reverse of that image, drawing in more readers to Supergirls series while making DC appear more progressive. * Those are the predictions - what did you think?
