No Creator Egos

I recently read a book that interviewed John Romita Sr., the first artist to take over on Amazing Spider-Man after co-creator Steve Ditko quit. In it, Romita explains how he purposely tried to imitate Ditko€™s style when he first started to ease the transition for the fanbase. I can€™t imagine any creator saying anything like that today. These days, everyone wants to differentiate themselves from what€™s come before, not match it. The tone of the book or the overall direction for the character doesn€™t matter; all that matters is what the creator has in mind. This is why so many creators make controversial decisions now. Everyone wants to recapture the shock of Gwen Stacy dying. The problem is, when it happens every month it kind of loses its impact. A new writer will come on to a book and then immediately tell a story that wipes out everything the previous writer added out of continuity. Kevin Smith killed not only Ellen Page, a long time Daredevil character, but Mysterio - a villain who doesn€™t even belong to the character he was writing. It just served his purpose to have these characters die. He paid no mind to whether or not future stories could be told using them, or if it was the best decision for the legacy of the character. It€™s an incredibly selfish mindset to have and pretty much every major creator has it.
