5 Things We Don't Miss About '90s Comics (And 5 We Do)

4. Don't Miss - Image Comics

X-Men Jim Lee
Image Comics

In 1992, seven incredible talents from Marvel Comics departed from the company to strike out on their own and change the comics world as we know it. Superstars like Todd McFarlane, Jim Lee, and Rob Liefeld went on to found Image Comics under the auspices of becoming a haven for comic creators.

While this was largely achieved, Image had its fair of share of burdens to shoulder as well. First and foremost being that the founders of Image Comics simply weren't businessmen.

Despite the initial hype behind the company leading to massive sales that rivaled and even beat some of the biggest books in the industry, problems soon followed. The worst among them were rampant delays. While the books were hot at the time, nobody can buy them if they aren't arriving on time.

Beyond that, allegations ran that Liefeld was launching his own imprint, Maximum Press, by leveraging his position as CEO of Image to finance his side project. Founder Marc Silvestri further accused Liefeld of poaching talent from his Top Cow imprint, which resulted in him withdrawing his assets from the company.

By 1996, Lee and Liefeld returned to Marvel for big money contracts to work on the Heroes Reborn re-launch.
