60 Greatest Ever DC Comic Book Covers

5. Brave And The Bold #28 (Mike Sekowsky)

While the Justice Society may have started the whole superhero team thing, the Justice League of America made it even cooler with their debut on Brave and The Bold #28, as drawn by Mike Sekowsky. This outstanding image is still perhaps the most famous visual of the Justice League to this day, as they are gripped by Starro in an action-packed cover which has been continuously referenced by other comics some 54 years later.

4. Watchmen #1 (Dave Gibbons)

Alan Moore's seminal comic book work is still an absolutely crucial piece of fiction for the medium, and this incredible cover by artist Dave Gibbons is one of the most iconic images in all of comics. The brutal contrast between the classic smiley face and blood is truly fantastic. There are eleven more issues with outstanding covers that deserve mentioning, but this initial trip into the world of Watchmen is still the best one that Gibbons produced for this amazing series.

3. Superman #75 (Dan Jurgens)

Although Superman had technically "died" in a previous issue of the comic in 1961, there was no fooling around in the early 1990's. Dan Jurgens absolutely aces the cover to Superman #75, as the finality of the tattered cape and wrecked city is almost too much to take. It's a strikingly powerful image, and it still works to this day as one of the most famous Superman images of all time.

2. Action Comics #1 (Joe Shuster)]

As the one that started it all, Action Comics #1 still holds a very special place in the hearts of comic book readers around the globe. Joe Shuster's monumental work on this fabulous cover is out of this world, creating a visceral image of Superman that has stood the test of time and continues to be referenced all these years later. When you think of Superman, chances are that you'll always come back to this timeless image.

1. The Dark Knight Returns #1 (Frank Miller)

The only word you can use to describe Frank Miller's glorious cover to The Dark Knight Returns #1 is epic, and it certainly lives up to that. The stark contrast of Batman mid-leap with the lightning and subdued sky is absolutely amazing, pulling every possible emotion from anyone who looks at it. It's arguably one of the most famous Batman images of all time, known even to those who have never picked up a comic book, and stands as the single greatest DC Comics cover of all time.
