6. Buzzkill #2 By Donny Cates And Mark Reznicek (Dark Horse)
What if you were a superhero who got his powers from drink and drugs? That's the situation for our hero, "Ruben" (his real name is yet to be revealed), who gains different superpowers when ingesting different kinds of booze and chemicals, becoming a kind of drunk Superman! Except a whole ton of bad guys are after Ruben - including his AA instructor who turns out be a killer robot! This is the one I missed last month but caught up on lately. It's got a great premise that I don't think has been done before and has some really funny scenes like the alternate vision of the knight in shining armour as he staggers toward the girl, barely able to stay upright he's so wasted. I know the Will Smith movie Hancock tried something similar but Donny Cates and Mark Reznicek pull it off much better with Ruben. This issue is especially violent (I mean Luther Strode violent) as Ruben's attempt at sobriety is brought to a premature end and the highlight (emphasis on "high") is seeing a severely messed up Doctor Strange-like figure emerge as Ruben's sponsor. I don't know where this mini-series is headed (it's only 4 issues long) but the story so far is interesting and it's well worth checking out if you enjoy superhero comics and want to read something a little bit different.
