7 Current Sci-Fi Comics That Are Way More Interesting Than Guardians Of The Galaxy

2. Uber

Nazis with superpowers. Except, you know, Nazis with superpowers taken deadly serious and completely ultraviolent. That's the premise of Uber, and it's pretty easy to drop into based on that alone if the concept doesn't make you feel a bit sick. It's probably natural to feel at least a little queasy, actually, as the comic from writer Kieron Gillen and artist Caanan White contains more than its fair share of death and destruction, rendered frequently and unflinchingly. The story takes place at the tail end of World War II in 1945, with Berlin under siege and Hitler determined to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat at any cost. Enter the Battleships, super-soldiers with unimaginable power created through horrific trials and ordeals to obliterate the enemy. The Allies won't take this lying down and soon develop their own supermen to combat the Reich's, looking set to increase destruction for both sides and any civilians unfortunate to be caught in between. Despite all that seeming far too ridiculous for words, the book reads like Gillen has done more than enough research to give characters like Winston Churchill and Nazi high command the ring of authenticity, which makes the tale all the more terrifying. Certainly a book with a message, but not one so simple as 'war is hell' or 'Hitler sucked' (though it's not saying those things aren't true...). What's more disturbing about everything that occurs within Uber's pages is that everyone seems dedicated to winning, no matter what the cost in flesh or soul. And that alone makes it a comic worth reading.
