8 Alternative Comics That Would Make Killer Movies/TV Shows
7. Hard Boiled
In 1990, Frank Miller was the hottest name in comics: he had revitalized Daredevil, given mature comics a boost with Elektra: Assassin, and reinvented Batman with The Dark Knight Returns and Year One. Superheroes, still known as characters for kids, had been dragged kicking and screaming into the shadows, and the industry hasn't looked back since. Miller's second act would be Sin City, but just before the first volume of that epic tome was release, he wrote the script to a magazine-format comic called Hard Boiled. With art by the inimitable Geoff Darrow, the book tells the story of a robot who doesn't know he's a robot, and the revolution he doesn't want to lead. It's a blood-drenched satire of consumer culture, from Bart Simpson crucifixes to Carl's learning he's a product of Willeford Home Appliances. There has been little news about a film adaptation since 2008. Various possible versions would have included actors like Nicolas Cage, and may have been directed by David Fincher or even Miller himself. Its graphic content would probably keep it out of theaters, making it like Heaven's Gate, but with robots. At the same time, it could also end the dystopian science fiction craze for a while, which wouldn't be a bad thing.

I used to do a mean Glenn Danzig impression. Now I just hang around and co-host The Workprint podcast at http://southboundcinema.com/.
