8 Awesome Comics You Must Read This Week (8 January)

2. Young Avengers #15 by Kieron Gillen, Jamie McKelvie, et al. (Marvel)

Young Avengers Vol 2 15 Textless Is it better to burn out than fade away? Well, at the very tender issue number of #15, the epic Young Avengers is sadly drawing to a close, just one year after it launched, or dropping the mic on the stage and walking away. This is the second part of the wrap party (seriously: what a great idea to end the series on!) where the Young Avengers and their friends are having a 2014 New Years Eve party and celebrating saving the Earth. That's it, by the way, there's no plot, just the characters having a fun time in their final issue - and yet it's so right. Like the last issue, a ton of stunningly talented artists draw the comic like Becky Cloonan who draws the first few pages with Broo as the DJ - I love Broo, he was one of my favourite characters from Wolverine and the X-Men (another great series drawing to a close soon!), and I was glad that he got to dance with a hot girl on New Years. Guy's had a tough year! Loki - no longer Kid Loki, but young adult Loki - has one of those quasi-serious/melancholy chats away from the party with Prodigy, underlining his complex character as well as the main plot of the series, if you didn't get it in the last couple of issues. If you're a Loki fan - and who isn't? - it's a great scene that only makes me more excited about the upcoming Loki: Agent of Asgard, as we get to see more of him in that. The mystery of the Not-Patriot is revealed (or is it?) and the final 5 pages drawn by Jamie McKelvie are pure magic. The Young Avengers head off into the light for another of their wonderful group meals, with Miss America kicking a hole in reality as they go for their first breakfast of 2014. That final page too... I know it's the fist-in-the-air, rousing rock music final scene in the movie, but it still made me sad because we're losing one of the best Marvel titles on the shelves. What a terrific series and what a perfect ending. Young Avengers - nobody did it better. Encore!
