8 Comics Outside Of Marvel And DC You Should Totally Check Out

3. Bitch Planet

Paper Girls
Image Comics

Created by writer Kelly Sue DeConnick and artist Valentine De Landro, this series began publication in 2014 and concluded in 2017, running for a total of ten issues before embarking on a brief hiatus.

This comic presents a sci-fi dystopian future where women are sent to an off planet prison for being "non-compliant." Presenting a story on the female prison system, DeConnick explores the experiences of a diverse group of woman on the outpost. The comic contains some authentic and exciting character moments mixed in with some cool action scenes that contain the perfect amount of violence.

In addition to DeConnick’s stellar writing, De Landro’s art has this retro seventies feel to it, which works really well with female exploitation film genre the comic takes inspiration from.

Filled with some great social commentary, along with heaps of great violence and some stellar art work to boot, this is an excellent comic and a worthy edition to anyone’s collection.
