John Romita Sr. is one of the true greats of the medium, and played a key role at Marvel during the sixties as one of the company's most potent creative forces.

After Steve Ditko departed Spider-Man in 1966, Lee asked Romita to make the switch from Daredevil and draw the series. Despite having reservations regarding the change , Romita proved to be a brilliant pick for the book, providing what is to many the defining image of the wall-crawler in a period that saw the artist draw the character for eight consecutive years.

After co-creating the Punisher in 1974, Romita was appointed Marvel's art director and had a hand in the creation of Wolverine (co-created by the late Len Wein), Luke Cage and Bullseye. Only Jack Kirby can claim to have had a greater influence in creating the visual foundations of that universe.
