8 Super-Essential Superman Books You Must Read
Created in 1933 by Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster, two high school students from Cleveland, Ohio, and published by Detective Comics (later re-branded as DC) in 1938, making his first appearance in Action Comics #1, Superman is the world's most iconic and recognisable superhero. Superman is Kal-El, the last son of Krypton, sent by his parents Jor-El and Lara from their dying planet to Earth whose sun gives Kal-El powers beyond those of any ordinary human. His Kryptonian vessel crashes in Kansas where a childless farming couple, Jonathan and Martha Kent, raise the boy as their own, naming him Clark. Clark grows up in Smallville, Kansas, slowly discovering his powers make him far different from anyone else on Earth, and Jonathan and Martha imbue Clark with a strong moral code which leads him to use his superpowers for good and the benefit of all humanity. When he reaches adulthood, he bids farewell to Smallville and moves to Metropolis working for newspaper The Daily Planet and is where we meet his gregarious editor Perry White, his friend Jimmy Olsen, and the love of his life, star reporter Lois Lane. Since 1938, Superman has gone on to become a cultural icon inspiring numerous films, TV shows, radio plays, video games, and, of course, comics, and is considered the greatest superhero of all time.
