8 Things You Didn't Know About DC's Black Manta

3. The Devil You Know

While older TV viewers may remember Black Manta as a member of the villainous Legion of Doom, those who watched Justice League Unlimited might remember his doppelganger, Devil Ray. Almost identical in appearance, Devil Ray is equipped with a similar diver's suit and gigantic helmet. He is known for his murderous nature and array of deadly deep sea weaponry, not unlike his comic book counterpart.

But who is this imposter? A long-lost brother of Manta's hoping to continue his infamous legacy? A deranged Black Manta cosplayer out for revenge against all costumed heroes? The answer, as it turns out, is simple. Ray was always intended to BE Black Manta, a familiar foe to the Justice League; however the rights to Manta's name were not in the possession of the creators of Justice League Unlimited. To get around this, they created a Black Manta analog named Devil Ray, who was Wonder Woman's villain and not Arthur Curry’s. Those familiar with the original Manta might have been confused by the switch in nomenclature, but by the time he makes his appearance in the Young Justice animated series he is back to being called Black Manta.
