8 Times Asgard Went To War

3. The Death Of The Mighty Thor

The Death of the Mighty Thor may well be the highlight of Jason Aaron's run on Thor. It has high stakes, beautiful art, tremendous character writing, and most importantly the jaw-dropping fight between Asgard and the Mangog. Hinted at back at the end of the Asgard/Shi' Ar War, the Mangog is the physical manifestation of an alien race's hatred towards Odin, who slaughtered them for reasons unknown.

The Mangog began his assault on Asgard by sneaking up and blinding the all seeing Heimdall and breaking his sword, then marching on to slaughter the Thunder Guard and Asgard's main army. Even Freyja piloting the Destroyer only delayed the Mangog for a moment before he ripped off the armor's arm.

The Mangog then went to complete his rampage by taking on Odin just in time for the Odinson to show up and lend a hand, which unfortunately only meant the Mangog breathed a little heavier as he proceeded to beat both gods half to death.

The Mangog's rampage would only end once Jane Foster, the Mighty Thor arrived. Unfortunately Jane's arrival was bittersweet since her wielding Mjolnir meant she had skipped out on her cancer treatment, and doing so would most likely kill her. Saying goodbye to Mjolnir, Jane used the enchanted hammer to wrap the Mangog in chains, then tossed Mjolnir and the Mangog into the sun with Asgard following closely behind. Not only did this battle end with both the Mangog and Asgard destroyed, but so was Mjolnir, and with that came the end to Jane's ground breaking time as the Mighty Thor.
