8 Watchmen Characters Based On Charlton Comics
2. The Comedian / Peacemaker
At it's core, Watchmen is a murder mystery, with the victim being Edward Blake, also known as Comedian. Since Blake is killed at the beginning of the book, most of what is known about him is detailed in flashbacks.
As a WWII veteran, Blake mastered fighting and was incredibly proficient with various types of weaponry. His cavalier attitude and cynical nature make Comedian a dangerous man. He was even able to best Ozymandias in battle when they first met. Blake is a symbol of the worst of America; stubborn, cynical, and always quick to turn to violence to end matters. He was closely based on Charlton character Peacekeeper who also had a skewed view of "heroics"
Peacekeeper was a pacifist turned hero, who wanted peace so badly he was willing to fight, and kill, for it. Willing to terminate his enemies at a moments notice, Peacekeeper saw morality as black and white. He chose to mainly go after dictators, hoping to topple their tyrannical reigns.
He was a skilled tactician, remorseless vigilante, and tortured soul, believing the ghost of his dead father to haunt him. Both he and Blake serve as a crack in the superhero visage, due to their pragmatic worldview.
