Batman: The Killing Joke is one of the greatest Dark Knight stories of all time and indeed arguably the outright best story involving The Joker. Its ending is one of the most eye-catching in comic book history, as it seemingly sees Batman and the Clown Prince of Crime sharing an unlikely laugh together. Batman tells The Joker that they can't go on as they are because, if they do, they'll end up having to kill each other. He then offers to rehabilitate his arch-enemy, who refuses the offer and says that the situation reminds him of a joke. Subsequently, both men break out laughing and the story comes to a close. However, the scene does actually cut away from the duo and the laughing suddenly stops. The last panel with them both in it showed Batman grabbing The Joker and some fans have theorised that he was actually choking him to death - hence the sudden silence.
