9 Awesome Fan Theories About The Joker

7. Comic Book Joker Knows He's A Main Character In A Comic

There is a very interesting theory that suggests that The Joker's craziness - and indeed his uncanny sense of luck and timing - can be explained by the fact that the character is totally aware of the fact that he is simply a component of a comic book story. Aside from the fact that he has openly spoken to the reader several times ("Don't try this at home, kids!" / "Better not miss this!" etc), the seemingly sporadic nature of his planning - which often ends up inexplicably working for him - is theorised as being because he already knows what the outcome will be, as that's simply how it was written. He also doesn't fear death - and that is theorised as being because he knows he's an important character and will never actually die. The theory also states that it is perhaps this realisation - that he is nothing more than a fictional character - which drove him to insanity. And the more you read stories with The Joker in them, the more this theory actually seems to makes perfect sense.
