Benefitting from a 20-year head start on Earth's Mightiest Heroes is the Sentinel of Liberty himself, Captain America. The star-spangled man with a plan was created in 1940 by Joe Simon and Jack Kirby, with Timely Comics' Captain America Comics #1 showcasing Steve Rogers socking Adolf Hitler square in the jaw. This issue actually made its way onto the stands a full year prior to the United States' entry into World War II, and went onto sell over a million copies.

Simon and Kirby's comic was a fantastic rebuttal to American isolationism and a fantastic symbol to use against fascism, so it's no surprise that the character's endured near constant success since his debut.

Granted a new lease-on-life after being resurrected by the Avengers, Rogers has constantly been at the forefront of the Marvel Universe and is arguably at the zenith of his popularity, transcending his status as a national symbol into something much more international and powerful.

The Second World War changed comics forever, and Captain America is a living testament to that fact.
