Sales: Over 210 million But Tom, I imagine you saying, Where are all the superhero comics? Well, I begin, Firstly, you're being formal with somebody you've probably never met. Secondly, The Phantom is a superhero. You bristle, I mean superheroes I've heard of. Which is fair enough, and now we're halfway through the list, we get to another character whose sales have no doubt been helped by his staying power. Captain America recently starred in a major blockbuster movie, but his popularity goes wayyyy back to the very war he fought in. Created in 1941, in the build-up to the US entering World War II, the first issue which saw Cap socking Hitler in the jaw on the cover sold over a million copies. Since then the character has been popular more for quality storytelling that jingoistic, light propaganda reasons. Punching Hitler's still pretty cool though.
