9 Reasons Why Grant Morrison’s Batman RIP Is A Masterpiece

8. The Black Glove Attacks! - And Batman Remains Standing

Black Glove In one of the opening scenes we see Bruce and Jet smooching and, like a lot of love scenes in Batman, you think it's an inane subplot that has no bearing on the story - Morrison's just throwing Bruce a bone, so to speak. But Jet, who knows Bruce is Batman, begins to admonish Bruce on his life's work. He shows her the cave and she's horrified, telling him that the money he's spent could've wiped out the national debt of a small nation, that he's wasted his life and needs to grow up. This is also one of the first clues to indicate Jet is not who she says she is - she's trying to get Bruce to stop being Batman. And then the Black Glove makes its move. Drugging Bruce with crystal meth, heroin, and all kinds of high-grade narcotics, they attempt to wipe out all trace of Batman from Bruce's psyche, taking away the costume, and dumping him on the streets, all memory of who he is, gone. This is also where the real storyline for Batman RIP kicks in. Walking the streets in a daze with a homeless man called Honor Jackson, Bruce struggles to figure out who he is while the drugs do their work on his mind - except the Black Glove forgot they were dealing with Batman. Batman has a plan for everything - EVERYTHING. He foresaw this insane scenario ahead of time - that someone would one day try to erase his identity to defeat him - and created a backup Batman identity IN HIS BRAIN, like a freaking computer, to combat it!
