Comic Review: All-Star Western #9

Night of the Owls goes old west this week. Why you ask? "Not sure" I reply.

Including All-Star Western in this Night of the Owls Crossover feels a little weak. For starters none of it takes place within the Night of the Owls and honestly the Owl assassin stuff in this issue feels shoe horned in to what seems to be an okay story. I didn€™t read All-Star Western generally but Jonah Hex is doing everything I€™d expect Jonah Hex to do and those around him seem to be pretty much what I€™d expect from a comic called All-Star Western (I especially liked the look of the blonde with the throwing knives €“ she seemed pretty cool). Anyway, despite the artwork from Moritat, that initially felt a little messy but has a real charm to it within the facial expressions, the Owl stuff literally clunks into this story and other than the glimpse at Gotham's history and how it shows another Wayne family member attempting to defend the city against corruption in his own way, there's nothing in here that add to the DC crossover all that much. All-Star Western is simply a title that€™s been given a platform to reach to a bigger section of the DC universe with its inclusion here. The chapter is totally missable really and although completists will want in, the story, that feels like three distinctly different events cobbled into one story feels like its business as usual for the monthly comics with some Court of Owls side orders thrown in the middle of it. There€™s nothing wrong with the issue as such but don€™t expect this odd inclusion to Night of Owls prove its worth in the larger story or anything.
