Comic Review: Danger Club #1

The text opening Danger Club #1 is really all you need to start a brand new comic book title;
Three Months Ago.
The universe was in deadly peril. The worlds greatest heroes were summoned into space to battle realitys ultimate evil.
Our mentors. Our guardians. Our parents. Our teachers.
They left.
And they didnt come back.
This adds a huge back story loaded with questions but its still been kept simple enough to have an impact. I like that. I like that a whole lot. However without a good story and likeable characters to follow up that fine introduction, Danger Club could have fallen flat on its face. Thankfully thats not the case at all and Danger Club proves to be a crackin first issue.
From the first page that has a young magician meet up with very Nightwing/Robin-esq central hero Kid Vigilante along with a very Nick Fury feeling kid with an eye patch in an alley, this is a pretty looking comic book. The character designs and colouring are all immediately great and theres something familiar to the visuals with an obvious riff on other titles like Teen Titans and what not. Rather than dawdle around, the story immediately gets goings and it feels like weve been dropped in the middle of a much larger world, one with a history and one that doesnt look so pleasant and seemingly only populated by super kids. Its not long before weve cutting to the moon where we meet a large robosuit piloted by a cute manga-esq girl searching for something. Before you know it we're back to our teen heroes on Earth and find ourselves in an arena, with our trio of super teens watching another batch of super-teens duking it out with one another for the chance to join Apollo, a very Ozymandias feeling super-teen who explains that whoever is worthy can join him. Phew, see I told you this comic didn't hang around didn't I? 
Now here is where Danger Club goes from a solid first issue to a first issue youll remember in a month because you'll be actively waiting for issue 2 to arrive. When Kid Vigilante hops into the arena with a simple Its time to beat the hell out of this son of a bitch theres a real sense that this is a big deal. I didnt know these characters and I have a limited knowledge of the world they live in but suddenly Im totally on their side (especially Kid Vigilante - he's cool!) and the battle that unfolds over the next few pages is pure comic book awesome. 
This is all quite a brutal affair, not THE BOYS brutal or anything (seriously what is?) but still theres a lot of blood flowing and more kids beating on kids than Hunger Games. On top of that theres a sense of importance as to why Kid Vigilante is pounding on Apollo and a sense of their history with one another. On top of that the visuals are very well handled making this fight feel as if something of importance is happening (even if were not 100% sure what that is at this point). Anyway, without giving away too much more, Danger Club hits all the right notes for a first issue of a super-comic and provides a team of four characters that I already really like already and look forward to seeing more of next month. This is a full on action spectacle but with a solid intriguing story underpinning it and I'm totally on board to see what happens once the dust has settled in the next issue.
