Convergence #6 Review: 5 Reasons Why It's A Mediocre Step In The Right Direction
4. Relevance!
Before DC released any information about Convergence, the Internet had already nicknamed this book as band-aid: a filler event to cover April and May as DC moved office from New York to California. After Dan Didio announced details about Convergence, many assumed that it would have no lasting impact on the DCU. Convergnce #6 hints that this many not be the case. Until this issue, the Convergence narrative has had no interaction with the main portion of the DCU, leaving many fans feeling apathetic towards this filler story. This issue changes things, as it opens with the Justice League of Earth 0 (i.e. the main 52 timeline) watching as a planet (most likely the planet Telos) enters their universe from another dimension. Other major characters show up such as The Oracle (the DC version of Marvels Watcher), the Red Lantern Corps, Nix Wotan from The Multiversity and Darkseid from the much-anticipated The Darkseid Wars. With references to so many major key figures from the New 52, the significance of Convergence might have revealed, as there now seems to be the potential for the Convergence characters to meet their New 52 counterparts. The latter half of the issue focuses on the classic comic book trope of heroes banding together to confront the big baddie. After Deimos threat, the displaced heroes of Earth 2 encounter the heroes of the pre-Flashpoint DCU. Here we have wonderful moments where Jay Garrick The Flash of Earth 2 encounters the pre-Flashpoint Flash Wally West, and Val Zod the replacement Superman of Earth 2 meets the pre-Flashpoint Superman Clark Kent. These types of meetings continue as our heroes join together in hopes of defeating Deimos. The issue then quickly moves to the end, with our heroes converging on Deimos, who has also amassed an army of characters, thereby setting up the next issue to focus on a major battle between both parties. Strangely enough, heres where one of the issues greatest strengths becomes also a weakness: the pacing of this recruitment scene feels jolting. Although its fun to read about these characters first encounters, the brevity of their interactions detract from the magnitude of these moments.
Since childhood, Bryant has been an avid fan of superheroes, and he has been reading comic books since 2006. His full name is "George Bryant Lucas"; however, after enduring countless Darth Vader jokes, he has chosen to go by his middle name. Born and raised in the United States, Bryant is currently living with his lovely wife in the country side of Wiltshire County, UK. Bryant does suffer from a mild case of dyslexia; misspellings and homonyms are to be expected on occasion.
