While Zoe is great, Dessy does edge her out as the better half of the couple. Dessy is a demon. More specifically, the daughter of the demon S'ym, the one-time leader of Limbo. Because she grew up in what is essentially Hell, sometimes, she often comes of as a bit strange, even at Strange Academy.

One of the first things Dessy reveals at school is that she knows Zoe Laveau's secret. But being from Limbo, she doesn't understand the concept of hiding herself the way Zoe is, and does a lacklustre job at empathizing with her situation. Nevertheless, Dessy tries to understand and listens to her friend, showing tremendous growth in the process. It takes a lot to navigate the difficult world of high school, and it's much harder if you're a literal demon without understanding of basic social mores.

Zoe's an adept magic user, saving the school against the evil Mister Misery showing true creative thinking in the process. She isn't perfect, but she is growing, and that's kind of the whole point.
