Zoe Laveau had a secret coming in to Strange Academy. She is a zombie, and to prevent anyone from finding out, she wore an amulet that disguised her true self. That dream quickly dissolved though as Dessy, her roommate, saw through her disguise.

But while Zoe felt more comfortable as a generic human student, she sacrificed that security for the sake of her friends. While being attacked by The Hollow - a cult of nefarious trees in the swamps of Louisiana - she reveals her true self, much to her friends' surprise. She summons a horde of zombies to help stave off their advances. That sort of bravery is surely not lost on her friends and it shouldn't be lost on readers either.

Later, during parent's weekend, Zoe's parents insinuate that she has a crush on Dessy and the two more or less are coupled off, even if it isn't technically official. It's a cute romance that feels more earned than other pairings because of the mutual growth the two have helped each other achieve. Dessy makes Zoe feel more comfortable in her skin, and Zoe stays patient in helping Dessy acclimate to life outside Limbo.
