Justice League 24: Forever Evil Review
As Ultraman closes in on a pained Jimmy Olsen he notices his signal watch sounding, laughing off this attempt to call the fallen Superman, it is no laughing matter when another super-powered being answers the distress call in mighty fashion. The usually villainous Black Adam streaks across the Metropolis skies with the evil Ultraman in tow, saving Lois, Jimmy and countless others in the process. Ultraman gains an abrupt upper hand in battling Black Adam, and he contemplates making an "example" of him as the book closes. This was a tremendous issue, going into the depths of the Ultraman character and dancing with the shadows of this evil über man, meeting his selfish and bickering birth parents on Krypton and the junkie Kents on Earth-3 were great perspectives to show the defaced side of the two-sided coin this character shares the main Earth Superman. The big showdown in the Daily Planet was a real treat, the pacing was action-packed and the beats just kept amping up the level of evil. First the sick revelations about the photo journalistic lack of decency of Earth-3's Jim Olsen, to breaking cameras and tossing around bodies as if they were rag dolls, things fatally escalate when Ultraman uses his ultra-breath to eliminate any newsroom uprising, until the unlikely Black Adam saves the day. Geoff Johns does a terrific job of getting into the tortured mind of Ultraman, showing us no redeeming qualities and nothing but pure evil, and shows us the key moments of Ultraman's dark mirror to Superman's known light of his history. The art is superb from page to page, not to mention the beautifully rendered splash pages, Ivan Reis' pencils and Joe Prada, Oclair Albert, and Eber Ferreria's inks all really shine in this Forever Evil crossover. Overall, I recommend picking this issue up! Five out of five stars, leaves you looking forward to the next issue and the next chapter of Forever Evil.
