8. A Lonely Place of Dying (Batman 440-2, New Titans 60-1)
Yes, this is the story that takes place immediately after Year Three, and yes, Batman is still mourning Jason Todd. However, this story introduces perhaps the most awesome Robin ever, Tim Drake. Tim Drake figures out who Batman and Nightwing are, and volunteers to be the new Robin, since Batman NEEDS a Robin. There's another story about Two-Face in there, but the real interesting aspect here is Tim Drake's origin, and how he proves he is superhero material. The theme that Batman needs a partner to balance him out is the fundamental element that makes the Bat Family such a compelling concept. Many people question why Batman needs Robin. This is the story that really discusses and examines that. Plus, the idea of another character figuring out Batman and Nightwing's identities is enthralling. Can he be trusted? While experienced readers know the answer to that, most audiences won't know how to take Tim Drake. It would be a really interesting arc for the character.
