Remembering Norm Breyfogle: 5 Iconic Batman Moments
3. Holy Terror
1991's one-shot comic Batman: Holy Terror - by Breyfogle & writer Alan Brennert - was a surreal tale that imagines a world run by a corrupt Theocratic government where church and state are one force.
Bruce Wayne is a young man of the cloth who discovers there are long buried secrets about his parents' murder. The ensuing investigation begins in the darkness as Bruce revolts by donning the demonic visage of The Batman.
The one-shot also debuted DC's Elseworlds brand that took the company's classic characters, and gave their stories a an unusual twist. DC was no stranger to featuring stand-alone tales that flipped their characters around into different concepts, but this was the first of a new ongoing imprint with it's own brand label. It was an innovation that has remained a vital part of DC Comics, and now is even the basis & title of this year's annual Arrowverse crossover.
