There's long been ghoulies hiding beneath the surface of Manhattan. The Marvel Age was heralded in by the first issue of Fantastic Four, where the Mole Man burst forth in the middle of New York city riding atop a giant monster. Since then he's put together a few different underground civilisations, with the most recent being the Monster Metropolis seen in the pages of Deadpool. Its name is one of those WD40 jobbies. Kinda does what it says on the tin. Lots of huge, Pacific Rim-esque kaiju simmering beneath the surface, ready to break through and wreak havoc. They were almost certainly be wreaking havoc. Rather than entering into civil negotiations.
